The Ball Park Street Fighter IV 2009 Spring Season officially comes to a close tonight when GeoM takes on Dead Cell for the championship -- and $5,000! Over 3,000 players competed on the ladder throughout the Spring 2009 Season. Thirty-two of those players qualified for the playoff tournament. Now, only two remain. Here's a preview of tonight's championship match.

GeoM dominated the standings all season long, spending the large majority of it in first place. After finishing with a record of 212 wins with only 11 losses, GeoM was awarded the #1 overall seed in the playoff tournament. In the first round, he defeated #32 Double Double by a score of 2-0. Then, he went on to defeat He's Insayne, the #16 seed, and Mega Buster, the #9 seed. Those two victories propelled him into the semi-finals, where #20 Viking Power was unable to pull off an upset. GeoM won the match 2-0 and advanced to the finals.

Dead Cell's regular season record hardly compares to GeoM's, but with 69 wins and only 9 losses, it's hard to call it underachieving. It was good enough to earn him the #7 seed in the post-season tournament, and a first round meeting with #26 seeded Decadence Rains Eternal. Dead Cell won the opening match by a score of 2-0, but the road only got more challenging from there. He had to defeated the #10 seed Bu12n to move into the quarter-finals, where another top seed awaited -- Reno Fresh. Reno Fresh was the #2 seed and a heavy favorite in the match-up, but Dead Cell claimed victory. Once again, now in the semi-finals, Dead Cell was faced up against a top seed. Neokarsh, the #3 seed, gave Dead Cell all he could handle. The match went into the tiebreaker round, when Dead Cell was once again able to pull off the upset. He's already defeated three of the top ten seeds in the tournament -- now he has to beat just one more.

The Ball Park Street Fighter IV 2009 Season has been one of the most exciting GameBattles seasons in recent memory, ripe with drama, records, a few upsets, and a $5,000 grand prize. Who could ask for more? Special thanks to Ball Park for helping MLG GameBattles make this season such a great success, and thanks to all who compete and acted as members of the community. Good luck to both GeoM and Dead Cell in their match tonight. Check back later this week to find out who won!
