The competition is down to just 64 teams!
On April 1st of this year, the Call of Duty: World at War Spring 2009 Regular Season began. Over 10,000 teams registered to compete throughout the season. Three grueling months of hard fought, all-out virtual war later, the competition is down to just 64 teams. Round one kicked off this week, and by the end of the month we'll have a champion. Here's a quick preview of what lays ahead.
Independence enters the tournament as a heavy favorite and clear-cut #1 seed. They dominated the Regular Season, winning 154 matches while losing only 15. That's not to say that they'll make quick work of #64
New Found Xtr3m3, but it would take a special effort for nFx to come out of the first round. At the other end of the bracket,
Clan Cleaning Products will hope to defeat the less experienced
Beer Pong All-Stars in the first round. Clan Cleaning Products finished with 155 wins and 27 losses, while Beer Pong All-Stars finished with only 13 wins and 6 losses. Current ladder "King" team
vIIv Gaming (85-13) also earned themselves a high seed in the tournament. They'll play a very inconsistent, but still dangerous, team
Puma (44-38) in the first round.
Despite the stacked rosters of the higher seeded teams, there are several other teams to be weary of heading into the post season, include
Terror Squad (60-9), who won eight straight games to close the season. They hope they can use that momentum to get past a struggling team
FNSM, seeded 54th.
Velocity is a new team that was able to compete at a high level throughout the season. Don't let the record fool you: they've won 48 times and lost 19, but they're no pushovers. The 79-27
Check 6 will have their hands full when the two teams go head to head in the first round. One more sure-to-thrill matchup faces #17
Total Karnage (74-17) against #48
All Rights Reserved (29-12). Total Karnage has a slight advantage, having been in this position before, where as All Rights Reserved is a new squad this season.
There are sure to be more than enough exciting matches in the first round of the playoff tournament. It's do or die time, and even the best of the best know that if they don't have the desperation and will to win, there's no guarantees of making it out of the early rounds. There are several up and coming teams trying to make a name for themselves -- and what better way to do it than to eliminate a top contender from the playoffs in round one? Here's to a great season and even better playoff! Check back next week for another Call of Duty: World at War Playoff Update!
