Serious question...
When you play sports games ie Madden NCAA NBA NHL SvR
They always no matter what have slight lag. you have to plan your hit sticks accordingly
BUT
When you play Call of Duty, Halo, Gears
There is no lag when played with a good connection.
I find this odd because there are Way more 360's connecting to a Halo game vs a Madden game up to 16 v 2
Why?

Probably because the EA servers suck.

I agree with what you say but show me someone who doesn't lag on Gears and I'll show you someone in denial.

I think that answer lies with Gears of War. You see, in GOW 1, you could only play with 8 people at once. But in the new GOW2, you can play up to 10 people, and in the campaign there is a ton more people on screen at one time, or so the screen can hold. It's because the makers of GOW completely updated their game engine.
This all depends on what game engine the game is made with. Maps are easy, they never move, but people, AI, moving crowds, it's a completely different story. It's the Frames Per Second and stuff like that as well. In Madden, you see 24 people on your screen at once, as well as the crowed moving and lights flashing, and it causes the game to have a slight lag because the game engine that was used isn't made for the Frames Per Second it's trying to use.
That also explains on how if a bunch of explosions go off at once or a bunch of stuff is happening on screen, games like Halo 2, and Gears would have a slight sluggish feeling or lag. It all just matters on how much is going on the screen and what the game engine is built for.
Or so I beleive, there are other factors as well.

madden and other ea games lag because they use servers which is so dumb since im sure most games would run smoother if it was just hosted by one player. With games like halo or gears there is usually lag unless your host or the host has a good connection. Alot of peoples connection cant really support 10 players thats why when i play pubs in gears i usually bridge just so i dont get lag switched or get a crappy host

Nah, I put it all together over time. I remember the Gears Of War developers talked about this a lot. A lot of people complained about a slight lag in Halo 2 and I remember it and I read up the responses and put this together.
It makes sense, the frame rate thing. A game lags when the game engine can not stay up with what they game is demanding.
