Account security is the most important topic you will hear us talk about on GameBattles. We cannot stress enough how imperative this is. No staff member (regardless of their position) needs your account information for anything. If there is something we need to change on your account, we can do it ourselves. Any information tied to you; such as your email, name, occupation and even your password; can all be changed if needed, by the appropriate people.
If you are ever approached by someone who claims to be a staff member, there is no reason they should be asking you to confirm or change anything on your account. If you are at all suspicious about someone you’re speaking with, ask them where you can go to find them listed on a GameBattles support page. If they are truly staff, they will be more than happy to direct you in the right place. DO NOT ask for a link. Tell them to instruct you how to find the appropriate Support page.
If you are indeed speaking with a staff impersonator, they will most likely have all of this planned out, and be very comfortable with what they are asking you. Don't be fooled or intimidated by their calm demeanor. This is the pit they are hoping you fall into.
Most impersonators will pretend to be staff in a management position. Others may choose department members or ladder admins, hoping to intimidate you with their perceived staff status. Below are a few things to look for when you find yourself in this type of situation:
- Are they threatening to ban you? No staff member will ever threaten you for information.
- Are they threatening legal action? GameBattles staff does not go around threatening legal action. This is absurd and would not be done by any respectable company.
- Are they asking you to change information? As mentioned above, we can change anything we need to if the situation calls for it. By no means should you be changing anything on your account to satisfy anyone's request (email, password, etc.).
- Did they give you a link to click on? Be careful about links you receive from impersonators. Sometimes they don’t lead to the advertised URL. If speaking over aim, hover over the link to see where it really leads. If you ever visit a site that looks like MLG or GameBattles and asks you to log in to your GameBattles account, but you’re already logged in on another tab or browser, DO NOT DO IT. This website may be just a clone of GameBattles with a key logger (virus) attached to the back end. Logging into this site will only send your information straight to its creator. From there, the account that you cherish is all theirs.
- Did they ask you to download something? The features on GameBattles, apart from the Octoshape media player on the main page, do not require you to download anything. GameBattles will never require you to download anything for patches, updates, or site changes.
In addition to all of this talk about people you may not know, we also stress that your account information should never be shared with anyone, including those you do know. As the account creator, you are responsible for all actions on that account. It doesn't matter how much you trust someone, giving out you password is the worst thing you can do. After all, if they break any rules on your account, it only hurts you. You may be thinking to yourself that there is one person you know you can trust with your password, and that they would never do anything wrong; and we could sit here all day and tell you stories of people just like you whose accounts were banned because those very same friends decided to break some rules at your expense. Understand that there is never a justifiable reason to give someone your password, and if this same situation were to happen to you, there is no 'my friend did it' card. It's all on you!
We trust that after reading this announcement you will be better equipped to handle these situations; hoping of course you never go through one. However, the fact of the matter is that some users on this site will devote hours of their day in order to gain even a single account for their own personal benefit. The best advice we can give is if you ever feel you are being targeted, or have even the slightest feeling you are being approached by one of these impersonators, BLOCK THEM IMMEDIATELY. After that, submit a ticket with the information you have on this impersonator. If he/she approached you on Skype, please include their Skype name (the same goes for aim, msn, etc.). Your efforts only further ours to stop these individuals from comprising the accounts of others. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to recover an account for you, so DO NOT leave anything to chance.
Heed this warning and do not walk around thinking that it could never happen to you. Too many people have made that mistake before.
